EBAY fees, there huge, question for ya.?

Ok so I sold an item for $5.00 and the postage was $8.00 that equals $13.00.

After EBAY took there fees out and paypal took there fees out I ended up with $3.58 to me for the item I sold. I didn't take out all the fancy stuff just the minimum AD with the one free photo.

How does some one manage to reduce the fees so that a person can actually make a decent sum on the item they sold? They say they only take out 9% which to me is huge but it seems like $1.42 is a far reach for 9% ...I'm getting $1.17 as 9%...I guess the .25 cents is the listing fee. There has to be a way to reduce the fees some how, I tried selling on ESTY.com and that was just a MAJOR waste of time and money, 6 sales in 7 months just isn't worth the time & effort waiting around 4 months for someone to come around and most of the time they don't pay...2 out of 6 sales didn't pay.

So I feel like I am kinda stuck right now with EBAY...any ideas?

Update:

Cragslists is SO limited in every aspect and you can't list in different areas, I've had the finger wag at me already for that. The audiance is far larger on EBAY but it's still like a flea market where everyone is selling most of there stuff so dirt cheap you can't possibly compete on some items. I'm doing this because I have been unemplyeed for quite a while and need to make a living some how, so I am selling plants as Flaflowerfloozie, I have an account with the same name on ETSY but if you ever wanted a clue what the meaning of frustration is...list something on ETSY you will have the true feeling of frustration in 2 months

Update 2:

@Flower...I have to stay competitive with what the market will bare..I read the % and it is in fact 9%!

Paypal is 3.5%...I did the math and subtracted everything, I ended up with $3.58 after all the fees, and postage.

Update 3:

I grossed 167.22, paypal took out $7.56 and I see so far on my bill from ebay I am going to owe another $24.13 leaving me with a grand total of $135.53...$31.69 in fees so far for this week seems more than huge after I yanked the numbers and did the math... for ebay that is closer to 15% maybe more when you add in PAYPALs fees we are up to over 30% just in fees...I need to figure out a way to REDUCE THE FEES ON TRANSACTIONS. It's my time my, my product and the only one making any $$ is PAYPAL and EBAY on my efforts...I'll never get any where like this!!

The total of your items was $13. Ebay takes out about 8% and Paypal about 3% which is 11%. So the fees should have been around $2. Check your actualy Ebay statement in Account>Seller Account>Select Invoice and see if it was 3.58 or that was only your estimated invoice. There may not have been a listing fee. Maybe your item prices are too low.

Doesn't really make sense to sell $5 items on eBay. Perhaps you should sell such very low items locally

    try craigslist.
