Was Jesus a Buddhist?

So there is a lot of evidence of Buddhist monks traveling to Judea during the first century. Many quotes in the Bible are derivatives of Buddhist phrases. It is very likely that Jesus came into contact with these monks and learned from them.

Do you feel that maybe this proves that Christianity should be rooted more in the beliefs of Buddhism?

Update:

Also I know that Jesus was Jewish but I am suggesting that maybe his belief structure and the need for change was influenced by what he could have learned and influenced by from Buddhist monks. Also, I'm not saying that Christians should become Buddhist, I'm just curious if anyone else has noticed the similarities between many of the teachings of Jesus and other Buddhist philosophers.

He learned from someone, and his teachings parallel Buddhism and Buddhism is 500 years older so I would say it is not far off that he had learned some things. You dont hear much about the early years of his life and many many books were taken out of the Bible. But this question will just piss off Christians. Read the book " Going Home" Jesus and Buddha as brothers by Thich Nhat Hahn, it is exactly what you are talking about.

    Good morning.

I've read others who have compared some of the recorded saying of the Christ in the New Testament and the Buddha in the Pali Canon showing their similarities. Some believe that in the twenty years (the so-called "Lost Years") between his ages of 13 and 33 when he entered his public ministry, Jesus traveled the Silk Road (which was used for trade between the Mid and Far East) to the area now called India and was exposed and influenced by Asian teachings. I'm not convinced of its veracity since it's difficult to separate human inclusions from the recorded teachings of either Christ or the Buddha.

There's an independent film titled "Beyond Belief" you may find interesting. If you're interested in pursuing this topic, you can view the film at http://www.beyondmefilm.com/ . It tries to make the case that Jesus was taught by Buddhists or Hindus during the so-called "Lost Years". Personally, I don't believe it without seeing some historical evidence instead of conjecture and supposition.

Perhaps, just perhaps, great minds came to similar conclusions and that's why teachings of love and compassion are found in most extant belief systems. An interesting topic but a difficult one to either prove or disprove. Actually, it doesn't really matter one way or the other to me.

Hope this is of some help.

    1) Was Jesus a Buddhist?

Considering that some of his teachings (as recorded in the Bible) directly contradict many Buddhist teachings, it is safe to say that he was not a Buddhist.

    2) Many quotes in the Bible are derivatives of Buddhist phrases.

    Unsupportable claim.

    3) It is very likely that Jesus came into contact with these monks and learned from them.

    How likely? Unsupportable claim.

    4) Do you feel that maybe this proves that Christianity should be rooted more in the beliefs of Buddhism?

My feeling on the matter is immaterial. Logically, it proves no such thing.

Actually Indian King Ashoka sent Buddhist missionaries to Egypt, Greece, and the Levant in the mid 3rd century BCE. In the first century there was a Buddhist community outside of Alexandria, Egypt, and Jesus could have learned Buddhist teachings from them when he was in Egypt. Jesus walking on water came from an older story about the Buddha walking on water. The Buddha taught against the older Hindu religious beliefs, while Jesus taught against the older religious beliefs of the Sadducees and Pharisees. Both the Buddha and Jesus rejected material wealth.

I'm pretty sure the Islamic terrorist kid on Youtube keeps telling me he was a Muslim.

And I think he was an atheist because he had to know he was trollin' people with such awful displays of powerful miracles in the 1st century of Palestine when most of them didn't know a thing about medicine or physics. But of course I'm an atheist so I'm no different than every other religion claiming Jesus was their an hero.

No, Jesus is not a Buddhist. Buddha doesn't believe he needs Jesus as a Savior. Jesus proclaims that He is God, and that He alone is the Savior of our souls. Buddhism doesn't point towards Jesus as the only Way, the Truth, and the Life - but the Bible does proclaim that Jesus alone is the Way.

I am quite certain he was aware of Buddhist philosophy, but I don't think he or anyone else considered him to be a Buddhist.

    No.

If Jesus repackaged some Buddhist ideas, it doesn't follow that those ideas should be modified (i.e., corrected), if Jesus intentionally deviated from them. By your logic, no ideas would develop, because we would constantly strive to return to the first source.
