Why is my o/d light flashing on my 97 Contour?

Happened about a week ago.

After the car goes above 30 or so for the first time after starting, the overdrive (O/D) light begins flashing and then doesn't stop until the car is turned off. It does not shift into 2nd or 3rd until it reaches a high rpm. Not sure what it could be. It has only 85,000 miles.

I've suspected maybe the O/D button is stuck or something because its missing off the shifting, or maybe the torque converter. Hope it just isn't the transmission itself.

Any help appreciated!

Could be just low fluid. The OD is a torque converter lockout. If the fluid is good you need it properly diagnosed. It could be electrical or a bad transmission.
