What is a troll these days?
When I first heard the term in the 90's (during the phone modem era) it was someone who was trolling for prospects. Sales, scams, etc. I noticed the change in context some odd years ago, but am just now getting around to caring enough to ask the new meaning.
So, what is a troll these days?
Well, Denny, that would be the newly standardized context which has me asking. There really are folks even less cool than you are. I honestly don't know what that means. Sorry if my ignorance offends you. It is a sincere question. I already know I am as ugly as the dolls I collected in the 60s.
Maybe not so newly standardized. I have worked computers since the 70s and don't play with them much. Apparently I need some netiquette training.

Trolls are but folks that browse around the vastness of the Interwebs searching for or creating anything to get people mad and angry. Many people mistakenly figure a person as a troll just for voicing their opinions and such, but they don't realize that arguing with them is what the troll's main objective is.
