How can I stop excessive snacking?

I quit smoking because I was pregnant. I haven't smoked for almost a year but I still crave a smoke all the time. I've also been eating excessively. I can't stop. I always feeel restless and have the munchies. Sometimes I'm not sure I'm even hungry. I try drinking lots of water instead of eating but its not working. Im getting fatter every day. At this point I'm considereing starting up the smoking again just so I can loose weight. I'm 100 times more unhappy like this than I ever was worrying about cancer and wrinkles while I smoked. Need help bad. I need advice as to how to stop the eating.

Change snacks. It's always good to snack. In fact, the best diet is 6 small meals a day instead of 3 regular. This boosts your metabolism. Drinking cold water instead of room temp helps you burn calories because your body will heat the water to ambient temperature before consuming. Change your snacks to healthy ones. Try crackers with peanut butter. fruit in the morning will help breakdown foods. Plan your snacking the night before and prepare a lunchbox with good snacks when youre not hungry. Take it to work with you then follow your plan. Make only enough to past you through the day.

The only time i find i can't stop eating is when i'm bored and just lying around doing nothing, if keep yourself busy it will take your mind off snacking. Go out, go swimming, take a walk, shop, whatever. And change what you snack on, I was eating tonnes of crisps but then i switched them for crackerbread and cheese, at first i thought it was horrible but the more you eat healther stuff the more your body will get used to it. Try changing your snacks for something else, nuts, fruit, etc.

it's healthier to be fat than to smoke.

took me about two years to finally stop wanting to smoke.

    anyways, this helps me:

    • getting out and walking.

    • avoid cooking shows and shows that feature eating (e.g. The Sopranos)

    • going to the snack, candy and cookie aisles of the market, then smelling and imagining (in detail) opening and eating those munchies — Mmmmm — then not buying them. I don't know why this is satisfying, but it is.

Sugar free gum. Sugar free hard candies. (fat-free and low calorie.) Get cinnamon flavored tooth picks to "suck" on. It gives you something in your mouth and hand to help handle the "restless" feeling. (I have had smokers tell me they have issues with not knowing what to do with their hands if they aren't holding a cigarette, and that is what helped my husband)

You should already be over the nicotine addiction, so now it is just a nervous habit trying to find it's way back in. Try to find a "healthier" alternative. Good luck.

Chewing gum or eating something that takes a while to peel or chew like nuts.

  • yes, chew gum. or get one of those fake cigarettes that don't effect your health. but chewing makes your body think you are eating so you crave food less.

    Anybody?? help me?
