The universe is expanding, but shoudnt it be coming together because of gravity?

    Its due to dark energy which is much more powerful than gravity.The dark energy is causing the universe to expand at a accelerating rate.The normal matter makes up only 4-5% of universe,dark matter about 21 % but the dark energy about 75%(i may not be exact).Normal matter and dark matter makes only 25% of the constituent of the universe.This means that only 25% of the constituent of the universe interact with gravity.75% of constitent is uneffected by gravity so the universe is expanding.

    Well yeah, it "should" be. That's why physicists were so surprised to find out that not only is it still expanding, but the expansion is accelerating. It had always been assumed that gravity would overcome the expansion and cause a collapse, the big crunch. This is why the idea of "dark energy" was created. It's just a label for whatever unknown force is causing it.

    And yes, Kemet is very wrong. Gravity is only produced by mass. But almost everything has mass. Even a single electron has mass, therefore is exerting gravity. And while gravity isn't being produced where there is no mass, gravity's influence is still there. Gravity's influence spreads out over VERY long distances. There is gravity in space, and everywhere else. It's true that gravity is a very, very weak force. But it acts over extremely long distances. The other forces are stronger, but act over much shorter distances. There is no point anywhere in the universe where you could be completely outside of the gravitational influence of something. Even if the only mass in the entire universe consisted of only our solar system. That influence might be very slight, but it would still be there. And astronauts do fall... This is why they feel weightless when in orbit. They're falling around the Earth.

    Good question but Gravity is not strong enough in comparison to the speed of the expansion and it only has a certain reach.

    Remember Gravity is very very weak compared to the other forces such as electro magnetism hence the reason why if you put a paper clip on the floor and use a tiny fridge magnet you can lift it up that means that that tiny little magnet is stronger that the entire Gravity of the whole planet as the paper clip stays stuck to the magnet and does not fall to the floor

    and what KEMET says is completely incorrect there is gravity where ever there is Mass i.e the earth

    Apply sufficient force to a space craft and it escapes Earth's gravity. Apply even more force and the space craft escapes the Sun's gravity, and so on.

    The universe expands because the initial force from the big bang was sufficient to let its contents expand possibly forever. Some of those contents, matter like stars and their galaxies became bound together by gravity (coalesced) because of small ripples in the fabric of space-time, whilst other zones of matter continued to drift apart having achieved an escape velocity. So, more distant galaxies and groups of galaxies race apart as space continues to expand, but the Milky way and Andromeda galaxies are gravitationally attracted to one and other, as are their stars and contents.

    Recently it has been discovered that not only are distant galaxies drifting apart as space expands, but they are doing so at an accelerating rate. The extra force to cause the expansion of space to accelerate is due to an unknown dark energy which seems to increase as space expands. It would appear that dark energy is now winning the battle against gravity, and the universe will expand forever. At some time in the distant future, only the Milky Way/ Andromeda and a few gravitationally associated smaller nebulae will remain observable, all the trillions of other distant galaxies will have escaped completely from our local gravitational zone.

    if taking into account only the observable mass in the universe, yes, the universe should be collapsing due to gravity,sooner or later. but they are actually observed to be accelerating,so, scientists are suggesting there might be some sort of matter that has the opposite effect of gravity,called dark matter. until it is proven,scientists just donno why.

    another thing, of the four fundamental forces in the universe, gravity is the weakest. and its effect can be felt at infinity. yess.....infinity. just that it will be very very very weak.

    the rest of the forces,while magnitudes stronger, has far shorter effective range.

    That is one of the biggest mysteries of astronomy at this time. We don't know why the Universe keeps expanding, and even seems to be speeding up.

    The initial expansion can be explained. The Big Bang scattered the matter and energy far and wide, and gravity has not yet had a chance to overcome the force of the Big Bang as of yet.

    The universe keeps adding space-time to itself. This adds distance between the galaxies.

    That depends on its mass. Omega is pretty close to 1, which means it will keep on slowing down in its expansion but never really stop expanding.

    It is reckoned to be, Dark Matter, which unfortunately

    evades detection by all the multi-billion £/$ Equipment

    availiable to scientists. ie; Complete bafflement.....
