In a movie, what is more disturbing to you - violence or sexual content?
Opinion Poll - what bothers you more, or what are you less willing to allow your kids to see? I'm curious to see what you all think.
For the record, I don't have a problem with either and enjoy movies that have elements of either one or both of those things. I ask because I've noticed a lot of questions here on Y/A asking if such and such horror/action movie has any nudity in it. This got me wondering... why is a parent who feels their kid is mature enough for an R rated movie okay with their teen watching the brutal beating and/or murder of another human being but not okay if they flash a little skin?
I picture a parent sitting there saying "Hey kids, check this out! This zombie is about to eat that guy! That's awesome! Oh... wait... Good Lord they just flashed a breast while that woman was taking a shower! Look away kids! Cover your eyes! What kind of sick movie is this?"
So, what's your opinion on the matter? Let's here it!
Lots of great answers, everyone. Very interesting input. I think I'm in the same boat as a lot of you in that I wouldn't allow my kids to watch something rated outside their age range. I was more curious about the mind set of the folks who do allow their preteens and teens to watch R movies but with restrictions as to which content is acceptable and which is not.

Violence is disturbing. I wouldn't call sexual content disturbing. It's more like uncomfortable and unnecessary. Most of the times they add a sexual scene to a movie is just to get more people to go see it. I think movies that have no sexual content end up being better. Also movies that have less violence and less profanity are way better too. I saw a movie once that had so many bad words I couldn't even follow the script. It just loses credibility when they add so many bad words or violence. There are so many good movies out there that have won awards and they didn't need any sexual content, violence or profanity in them. That's the kind of movie that I like to watch. I do like watching scary movies but the ones that are full of suspense. Those are scarier than the kind where they kill 10 people in one scene.
For example a movie that I thought was too gross and violent was Breaking Dawn. I think it should have been rated R. It was worse than other movies that have been rated R. That was very disturbing to watch and if I had teenagers I wouldn't let them see it at all. A lot of the things they showed was unnecessary.
I don't think parents should let their teenagers watch films that are Rated R. Even the PG-13 movies these days are full of crude humor and sexual content that you would expect to see only in a Rated R film. What happened to John Hughes type of movies. A Pretty Pink or a Some Kind of Wonderful? Now that was good scriptwriting.

Non really bother of that much. When I watch gore I enjoy it, and when I see nudity I enjoy it. If I did have kids, I'd let them watch the films wit the violence at the age the certificate allows me to. One particular grievance I have is with film censors, who let the outrageous bodily mutilations get past, but if a woman gets her t**s out, the certificate will get bumped up. Buy or rent the dvd This Film Is Not Yet Rated for more info.

Personally I can’t watch violent sexual content and I wouldn't want my kids to see it either. As far as violence vs sexual it depends on the kid/age and the movie. I don't think either is wrong or bad if they understand. My 12 year old is allowed to watch R films if I have watched them and if I still think there is something to worry about I watch it with him that way he can ask questions or I can explained something if I feel the need.

Thanks for this question, personally violence bothers me more than sexual content, but I think I a maybe a little of one of those parents who restricts sexual content more than violence for my kids, don't get me wrong I wouldt let m watch hostel and films like at but I do seem pretty lax on the zombie stuff but I'm going to go away and rethink , as looking at the point you make I appear to be off a little

to me it really depends. if you have young kids then they probably shouldnt see alot of violence, but they probably wont know whats going on about sexual content. though of they do its only natural for the questions. otherwise, for older kids, if their parents are okay with r rated movies, then thy should know theres gonna be some nudity. i dont see a problem with either. the world is a violent place, yet no child should be sheltered from sex or nidity on my opinion because thats human nature.

Neither bother me either. If I HAD to choose however between the two I'd say violence over sexual content.

In European films there is way more nudity than in North America. In Asian films there is way more violence. Both of these places make superior films than Hollywood, so I don't mind either one.
As long as the kid has a clue that its all fake. Obviously you don't want a child to watch either sexual porn or "torture porn", that is just sick.

I'm okay with violence, because I know it's fake. Nudity, on the other hand, is not fake, and therefore I get uncomfortable watching it with other people. Alone, I'm fine with it.
