Being British subjects, many thought it was wrong to turn traitor and rebel against their sovereign,King George III.

Many colonists weren't effected by the indirect taxes imposed on luxury goods that they couldn't afford to buy in the first place.

Most colonists had little in common with the rich, slave owning political and financial elite that fomented, started, and ran the revolution.

Essentially, most 'Americans' at the time thought of themselves as British subjects, and while some of them they may have been frustrated with some of the Crown's actions, they thought that a revolution was not the right thing to do. They wouldn't have seen it as joining the British side, but rather, that they'd never left it.

The Americans who wanted to separate from England were in the minority of the colonial populace. Many still felt a loyalty to the British crown.
