Powering laptop without charging?

I brought a laptop the other day, ad one thing my friends warned me about was leaving it on charge; apparently most of them just leave it on charge when they're at home and its next to ruined their battery life.

My battery life is only 2hrs, so when I'm at home its obviously more convenient to power it by the mains. I found a dell battery mode which lets me keep the charger plugged in without charging the battery; since leaving it plugged in for four or so hours, it hadn't got hot and the battery life hadn't gone down. Is this good for my battery/laptop?

It's perfectly fine with modern batteries. All types of rechargeable batteries used to come with warnings to remove them from the charger when they were full but it's not necessary anymore. Be it your cell phone, cordless home phones, GPS, or laptop battery it's perfectly fine to leave it plugged in all of the time. It wont harm the battery, in fact it will preserve battery life since your not using it. I don't know what mode your talking about but you don't even need to use such a thing.

    So many myths about charging.

The truth is that when you leave a cell phone or laptop on charge, when fully charged, it automatically stops charging.
