The real reason is that Facebook has been blocked by the government of India.

The Indian government has put Facebook and 11 other Internet companies on trial for not removing the content that is considered offensive to the Indian sentiments. The site became inaccessible shortly before midnight yesterday.

Update at 11:08AM on 13th March

The good news is that the website has begin to open up in various places in India. It is however acting erratic -sometimes it opens sometimes does not. If a compromise formula has been worked out -the DNS unblocking may take a little while. Stay tuned for more updates on the issue.

Same issues here in Delhi since around 3:30 a.m. I did try the following steps and I could access Facebook for some few minutes; but you will have to do it every once in a while.

    1. Clear your Browser cache.

    2. Close your Browser.

    3. Press Windows key + R (This will open Run).

    4. Type CMD and press Enter.

    5. Type ipconfig/flushdns and press Enter.

This will clear your local DNS cache or your ISP’s DNS and you'll probably be able to access Facebook (if you're lucky - it works for me.)

Remember to open your games ASAP and not close them ever again, if you're planning to play any because the same issue will happen with Facebook pretty soon again; though, your game will run smoothly.

    Dear Friends,

It is the right time to use Open DNS. Open your network settings and in the DNS field, put either of the two IP addresses following.

    208.67.222.222

    208.67.220.220

Restart your network interface and you are done. This Facebook down issue it due to a DNS issue from backbone network as I understand from different sources. It is the right time to switch the best DNS available out there and which is open source too.
