    35 U.S.C. 101Inventions patentable.

Whoever invents or discovers any new and useful process, machine, manufacture, or composition of matter, or any new and useful improvement thereof, may obtain a patent therefor, subject to the conditions and requirements of this title.

Examples of things you would patent, assuming they are new, useful and non-obvious inventions:

    1. machines (mechanical, electrical)

    2. articles of manufacture (objects like unique tires, doorstops, light bulbs)

    3. processes (surgical procedures, computer software systems, business methods)

    4. compositions of matter (pharmaceuticals, recipes, mixtures)

    5. improvements to inventions in the first 4 categories

    Luke:

I would patent an engine that ran on a fluid that had magical expansion properties to drive a 25 KW generator by nothing more than the hear of a bunson burner..

Now THAT is hot and patentable.. Just need the enabling disclosure by golly!

A patent can be granted for any original invention in any field.

The USPTO has a searchable database containing thousands of patents here:

Just type in some random search words and see what comes up.
