Is it possible to repair a hernia in a 400 pound dairy heifer by duct-tapeing it?

Our veterinarian examined this heifer and said because the hernia(located in her navel) is soft we should take a cut in half tennis ball and tape it in place by using duct tape round and round her belly. she says it would heal in 3 to 4 weeks. I'm skeptical because i have never heard of doing this before. Please answer only if you have livestock experience.

Surgery's much better as it would lead to healing. The duct tape would eventually break down or, worse, the cow might form an allergic reaction to the tape gum.

i've heard of it in older "pet" animals (like a horse) that may not do so well in surgery, but never on anything else.

BULLSHIT. A weak spot in the abdominal wall will NOT "heal" from anything done to the outside.
