When to start flea treatment?

...in Northeast Ohio. I'll talk to a vet in the morning, but now I'm curious what the people here say. I usually start in April but it has been unseasonably warm all winter and spring. Although it has been on and off cold (30s-40s) today we were in the mid 70s. So I'm thinking I should start right now, but on the other hand, I'm wondering if the fleas have had a chance to hatch (or whatever they do)? What do you think?

Update:

And I'll pick a "Best Answer", if there is one.

I live in Michigan and I was trying to figure out the same thing. It was 73 here today and I gave in and gave her the first treatment. It may be early, but I'd rather have her (and my house!) protected from fleas just in case. We are constantly out and about in the woods and around other dogs, so I was just playing it safe. It's also supposed to be quite warm for the next few weeks, so if they haven't hatched quite yet, they probably will soon I would think.

I live in TN and we have to treat year round since it doesn't get cold enough to kill fleas. We would need a hard freeze for a couple of weeks to be effective. We never stopped seeing fleas this year at the clinic so if i were you i would go ahead and treat. It won't hurt the animal and that way you don't have to worry about the animal getting them and/or bringing them into the house. Good luck!

Usually you start when they are over six months of age.
