Why do Chefs wear that funny looking poofy hat?

Just curious. It doesn't seem to be very practical.

    It's a status symbol,,the higher the hat, the more status they have in the kitchen. Also, the number of pleats in the hat also mean a higher status. Those hats date back 400 years...

  • Some establishments require it as part of a uniform because it's in accordance with health code standards.

    It lets the heat that is coming off their head ( they are standing in a hot area) rise and keep them from overheating
