It's a long list. A long list. Politically one president had served in during the Mexican-American War, Jefferson Davis was a colonel with the Mississippi Rifles and was at the Siege of Monterrey and the Battle of Buenna Vista. Most of the generals who had been in the Regular Army prior to the war had served during the Mexican-American War. Others had served in the volunteers during that war. To name a few:
Robert E. Lee
Ulysses S. Grant
Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson
James "Pete" Longstreet
George E. Pickett
Lewis A. "Lo" Armistead
Winfred Scott Hancock
Jefferson C. Davis (Federal general, not to be confused with the afore mentioned Confederate President)
Abner Doubleday
Joeseph E. Johnston
Richard S. Ewell
Pierre Gustave Toutant Beauregard
Daniel Butterfield
Rush Hawkins
Winfield Scott (Old Fuss and Feathers was the General in Chief of the Federal Army at the start of the war and had been the General who took Mexico City)
George H. Thomas
Joseph Hooker
Thomas W. Sherman
A. P. Hill
George B. McClellan
George Meade
George Stoneman
