Why are Belfast and Southampton building museums to Commemorate the Titanic?

The Titanic had two major design faults, the bulkheads didn't go all the way to the top, therefore the compartments were not water tight, and there were not enough lifeboats for everybody, White Star Line claimed it to be unsinkable. The crew, largely from Southampton, didn't keep a proper look out for icebergs, and consequently, there was a great many lives lost.

It wasn't just a ship that was lost. It was a lot of people. Museums help us learn from our mistakes.

A lot of people in Southampton are related to crew members who were lost. Are you going to blame the entire crew (stewards, stokers etc) for not keeping a look out?

In fact, the new museum in Southampton, is not just about the Titanic. It's dedicated to Southampton's maritime history. The Titanic is included.

It was built in Belfast and it's home port was Southampton. This was the probably the most famous liner of the early 20th century. Although there were numerous design and navigation faults and lot of people died these are not reasons for forgetting the disaster.

Surely it is better to have accurate and sensitive museums to exhibit what remains and tell the true story. If these museums were not built then people would still be thinking that the "Leonardo DiCaprio" film was accurate, which is was not on several important ways.

Built in Belfast, sailed from Southampton...............

As far a Northern Ireland goes East Belfast IS H and W, the ship yard the rope works and part of a proud culture............few who still live there have not got family who didn't work in some way in the industry........... the Titanic Quarter completely changed now, yet Samson and Goliath ( yellow ship building cranes) still tower in the skyline.............. I look out of my office window onto the Titanic Quarter, it is an important part of our history, our learning and remembering.............. and it is important for our future generations too

Because the people in those cities who pay council tax are wealthy and philanthropic. They elect people not just to sort out the bin collections, but to build great edifices, at public expense, which will glorify the towns - and by extension - the populations of those cities, which are to be world recognised for their traditions of workmanship and industry.

Instead of paramilitaries and prostitution, like they are now.

The question shouldn't be so much Why are they doing this but WHERE are they getting the cash from when everyone else is in dire straights.
