How do you say "keep" in Spanish, as in a pet?

Hi, I wanted to say "he is the one we kept," speaking of a litter of kittens (two were adopted out and the one we kept) - as in "can we keep him?" or something like that. Is it "el es lo que guardamos"? I could not find that particular definition for all the words that mean "keep". If it makes a difference, I am speaking to a Colombian. Thank you!!

Jennay I'm from Argentina, but the meaning has to be the same: nos quedamos con ese gatito / perrito. Ese gatito me gusta. Lo quiero. Me quedo con él. ¿Podemos quedarnos con él?

Ese gatito, ¿lo podemos tener? Can we have (keep) that one?

Ese gatito es el que escogimos. That's that kitten we chose (kept).

Ese gatito, lo tenemos guardado en su propio cuarto. We keep that cat (kept, put away) in his own room.
