does this sound right to you, Medical bills?

Ok so I have cancer we can't find financial help and we apply and get turned down for everything that would help.

My doctor said today that since I am scheduled to start chemo on monday that he will fill out the papers for my wife to take family medical leave what this will do he said is that she will still have a job but she will have no income so they can't turn me down for help. SSI and Disability . The problem was she made $150 dollars a month to much which really isn't true because they all calculate gross not net and don't take medical bills into account . So every one was turning me down even though I can't work . Does this sound right . It sounded shady to me but he said that he was going to require her or someone to be home since I will be doing chemo as well as radiation therapy and will need supervision.

Update:

I don't know if they will back date it but atleast new bills won't pile up.

Update 2:

Gracinda, I don't understand you don't think it will work or you do. The way he explained it was that my wife makes x amount to much but since leave is unpaid she will have 0 to claim on the paper work as she can produce the FMLA paperwork

Update 3:

Katherin, I do understand all you have said but the problem we have is I have no insurance and her job only has open enrollment so Now I would have a pre-existing condition. See we have tried all of the things we could find including asking her employer to reduce pay or cut time but they would reduce her time because like all salaried empoyees they rip her off working her 50 to 60 hours a week and as a store manager they would not let her step down and only gave her FML as an option. Once my benefits are approved she would be able to go back to work . also our church is willing to let her work there part time so we can still make our household bills but not make to much. The fact is this is working the system I know and I hate it to but the fact is all these places that collect money caying they help cancer patients don't they only give you more phone numbers that give you more phone numbers and well we ran out of phone numbers and patients for the system to work. I see all kinds

Update 4:

So we understand each other folks. I was put out of work so I had no insurance I didn't quit or choose to sit on my butt I have always worked . I have tried every possible thing to help my situation but I have family that can't help and every one else just wont. I am just trying to get my benefits approved because we havent even started yet . I have $100,000 in medical bills and have not even started treatment yet. I have even tried fundraisers but we just had a woman plastered all over tv who was running a cancer scam so every one has stopped helping thinking it is happening again. I am just trying to get help. I don't deserve to die when I have done everything right . People seem to think I can just go get treatment for nothing thats just not true. I had to pay $5000 just for a surgery that they forgot to do when I was admitted to the hospital so they wouldn't schedule it without payment. I have doctors that couldn't start my treatment until the surgery was done.

If your wife takes leave and has no income (was about $2k a month) and SSI has a max benefit of $698, how are you going to pay rent, food, etc. for your family?

Obviously your wife's income alone is over the amount to be eligible for medicaid. Would it not make more sense for your wife to cut back to part time to reduce her income by at least $150, but still have income higher than SSI would be? I would suggest your wife talk to her employer and see if there is any type of arrangement that could be made. SSI is a federal welfare benefit for low income disabled and so you must meed the household income guidelines for your household and have no more than $2k in assets.

FMLA is only 12 weeks per year. Will your chemo treatments be complete in 12 weeks? If not then a longer term solution would be best for you. Is your wife entitled to medical benefits that you could be added to?

    Best wishes!

Well, what he's essentially saying is that with the FMLA leave, your wife could be off work, unpaid, which will drop her income by X amount, which could potentially allow you to qualify for assistance.

The only catch is that she'll be off work. unpaid.

If your doctor is going to do the procedure, go through with it, and hope that Medicaid/whoever backdates the coverage.
