What illness does my mom have?

My mom has had some sort of mental illness for decades now...and whenever she doesn't take her medicine, she will randomly become angry and occasionally compressed after the anger...my dad really can't take it anymore and they always yell at each other when this happens...is there a name for this illness and is it curable?

Update:

Update 2:

She's not not taking her medicine on purpose....the problem is that she's very forgetful...she's been going to a doctor for years...

can't tell, and when she skips her drugs, she's in drug withdrawal, and research shows that even a person without any sort of mental disorder may behave that way if they cold turkeyed off that stuff, after taking it a long time.

Imo, it's best to either stay on meds, or go off meds, tapering off slowly over a couple months or longer, and STAY off meds, and learn coping skills. Going on and off meds is the worst choice, because the person is constantly in drug withdrawal.

PS the way drugs are prescribed nowadays, you can't assume what the problem is based on what she's being given. Docs hand out antipsychotics like candy now, for things like insomnia and anxiety disorders, so maybe someone can't sleep, and you see they take seroquel, and assume they have schizophrenia or bipolar. NOPE. Can't assume that.

    manic depressive

    perhaps "bi-polar"

there is medication if this is the case. they believe that bi-polar is genetic. however, i am not in the medical field. my question is, what medication is she taking now and what's it for? if your father cannot take it anymore, it needs addressed, for everyone's sake. i lived with someone with bi-polar. more times than not, they have no idea that they are in the state that they are. they have random and frequetn mood swings, they often have no concept of time, and unfortunately lie, although they don't do it intentially.

*if she is already taking medication for depression or bi-polar, but not taking it properly, there is no choice, she HAS to take it to level her moods...again, i am not in the medical field though. it takes alot of patience to live under these circumstances. take care

talk it over with your dad, try to get your mom to the doctors.

Sounds like bipolar disorder. I'm not a trained doctor, so I could be wrong. I'd do some research on it.
