Chocolate cake frosting?

I'm planning to make a piano cake, so I need dark frosting for it. Would it work if just melted dark chocolate and spread it over the cake? I know it will harden again, that's not a concern. but I've never done it before. will the chocolate crack and fall off the cake?

Update:

I can't use cream or anything dairy, I'm lactose intolerant

Yes, mix it with a little bit of butter and powdered sugar!

Your piano cake would look better with a chocolate ganache. It will have a nice lustre to it. it's basically melted chocolate and heavy cream and it hardens nicely but you can still cut through it without it cracking. It's easy to find this recipe online, it's very basic.
