Good average speed on a road bike?
At my last race, I took to the front of the pack because everyone was being stupid. On the gentle rolling hills, I maintained a 19-23 MPH average for seven or eight miles, and I managed to drop about a quarter of the field with the pace I was setting. Is that a good average speed?

Average speed is just that, average taken at the end of a ride or race, a single figure. Don't know what sort of race it was, but where I live an average speed for 50-60 year old master racers would be close to 25mph for a 50 mile race. Yours sounds more like a ride than a race

Your figure, "19-23 mph" is a pace, not an average speed. That's pretty good for a club ride, but seems a bit low for a race. Your actual average speed was probably closer to the 19 mph mark. A few years ago my buddy and I did a 100-mile timed event, relay-style and with no drafting. My split averaged 26.1 mph. That meant for much of the ride I was doing 27-28 mph, and hills brought my average speed down.
