Seniors - Do you remember?

The late Gilbert Harding? Do you have a favourite story?

I came close to meeting him once, as a schoolboy, but in typical grump he moved away.

He was a grumpy old so-an-so, but I think that's what made him popular. We were on the edge of our seats in anticipation of what he was likely to say or who he would upset next.

I remember him best as a member of the panel of TV's What's My Line, also as chairman of BBC Radio's Twenty Questions.

I seem to recall that he died on the steps of Broadcasting House, but that may be my memory playing tricks.

Yes I do remember Gilbert Harding from Whats My Line, with (Lady) Isobel Barnett and Barbara Kelly (Bernard Braden's wife), the host was Eamonn Andrews.

Gilbert Harding was always rude and grumpy on screen, I read that he was like that in real life as well. Although his friends had a different opinion of him, I suppose he was the type of man that disliked everyone until he decided he liked them!

Gilbert Harding was well known for his acid comments to people. Once at a wedding a rather pompous man said to Gilbert: "The bride and groom make a really good couple". Gilbert's response: "Well, you should know - you've slept with both of them".

Here he is in action on "What's My Line ?"

No, I don't remember him. However, I did see

Paul Harvey Sr. in person when he spoke to the

Lions Club in our town many years ago. Nice guy.

I really miss his noonday newscasts.
