Are used HDPE Pickle Barrels safe for storing emergency potable water supply?
I have a source for 55 gallon black plastic HDPE barrels that were used to ship pickles and pickle brine. They get dumped out and then cleaned. Sometimes before they are cleaned they might get some mold or something. If I clean them really well with bleach are they safe to store emergency drinking water or water for camping trips? The seller calls them food grade/food safe.

Certainly. HDPE does not contain plasticizers, typically. They're actually very desirable water storage vessels. It might be difficult to get the pickle taste out, but that won't hurt you.
