Can you refer me to some music?

I really like Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Yngwie Malmsteen, and the like. Mostly instrumentalists. I like the use of the whammy, the blistering, and the screaming of the guitars, or even twin guitars. Within the metal genre, I know there is a lot of talent, and I am aware that the music can be hard but I prefer my metal (music, not necessarily the players) to be on the pretty side...melodic, technical, well done..any extremely obvious classical influence is a plus. Also, I don't have any interest in satanic or excessively gloomy lyrics.

Thanks for the help!

Try some old school Mike Oldfield. Very classically influenced but you still have to hunt and peck with him as he also tried to appeal to european pop. Ommadawn and QE2 are good ones. An excellent guitar player.

Another would be Frank Zappa. Look up "Shut up and play yer guitar." Frank Zappa's library is HUGE. Lots of material there. You could look up Frank Zappa material for several years and not hear the same tune twice.

Also The Bridge of Sighs by Robin Trower.
