Is this lactose intolerance?

Since I was very young my family has always thought I was lactose intolerant, but we never went to a doctor for it. Whenever we'd go out for ice cream I would get very sick. However, recently I have been wondering if it is really lactose intolerance. I still get sick from ice cream, but I can eat milk with my cereal and I have no trouble with yogurt. I read that if you are really intolerant you can't handle anything, whereas with me it is mainly the ice cream. I was wondering if anyone knew something else this could be?

I have the exact same problem lately! I don't think it's lactose intolerance though, and is more likely something else in the ice cream that sets you off. Keep note of which ones do and do not make you sick (if any), and compare their ingredients to each other. Or, just keep away from ice cream. You can get frozen yogurt in some stores instead. I myself still don't know what it is, but it doesn't seem to be lactose intolerance. Good luck finding out what it is!

It's probably something else commonly used in making commercial ice cream such as vegetable oils, carrageenan, agar agar or other additives to make the ice cream smooth or give it longer shelf-life (or freezer life, if you will).

If you can find an organic ice cream that doesn't list any additives, you might try a bit. It will be more expensive.

If you can have milk in your cereal without a problem, you probably are not lactose intolerant.
