why is war poetry important to study today?

As a Vietnam veteran, I can tell you that the mind of a soldier at risk in a foreign land brings up feelings from within that the average person would never experience, and probably couldn't understand.

War poetry takes you into the minds of young men and women whisked away from warm, friendly "Americaville" and dumped into a hostile land wanting to take their lives.

If nothing else, it helps one understand why so many vets are so screwed up after returning home.

I don't think it is important at all. Perhaps it could be important because people would see that war isn't a solution to anything.

It is not important. Time would be better spent reading Charles Dickens and Shakespeare.
