Do record stores still have midnight album release parties?

I feel like I don't hear about them anymore. I remember going to them in the 90s and early 00s. Usually you got something free like a poster when you bought the album. Plus you just got to meet other die hard fans. I guess record stores don't really exist anymore either.

Update:

Didn't Sam Goody get sued for price fixing? That place was the worst.

Update 2:

What about Jammi Jyzz? That's more in keeping with recent American ideas about vowel usage in names.

I've been to a few at Amoeba in Berkeley & Hollywood in recent years, not at midnight though. Licorice Pizza, Tower, The Wherehouse, hell, even Virgin...I miss record stores :(

Some bands ( X for one) still have midnight release parties wherever they can-clubs, coffee houses, the few independent record stores still around.

    Edit:

What a coinky-dink, I checked my Facebook feed after answering and found this notice of an X (well John Doe and Exene at least) release party...and at Amoeba no less ;)

I imagine the internet and big discount stores have put most record stores out of business. In spite of the convenience, it's a shame that some old traditions are falling by the wayside as a result. That's progress for you :/

There are still Ernest Tubb record stores around but I think they're as much a tourist attraction as anything, and pretty sure they don't carry any rock or pop.

Looks like this one I've been to a few times is still in business.

Unfortunately, record stores seem to be going the way of the dodo.... altho my kids have been to a couple of midnight release parties for video games lately. Haven't heard anything about record stores, tho. Sad development imo.

I haven't been to one of those since the late 70's/early 80's.

Depends on where you live...we have plenty of record (vinyl) stores here.

Here's two lengthy videos that I shot at one of my favourite local haunts...Recordland!

I'm sure I remember hearing that HMV London had some a couple of years ago {I think they've closed down now...}, but I may be thinking further back than I realise!
