Hmm.. the last boyfriend I broke up with always wanted to fight. So I just waited until he started another fight and I said "I'm leaving you."

If you don't really see or talk to this guy, maybe it won't be so hard. You said he's cold as ice? Well, the next time you're talking to him, just mention that you are really feeling a distance between the two of you and ask him if he wants to move on. (Then you kind of leave it in his hands).

If he wants to work on it but you really don't, then you can tell him that you just think it's best if you part ways, and list some reasons why you'll both be better off.

I wish I could be more helpful. I believe in just being blunt and honest.

You only get one chance at life (unless you are one of those nutcases that believes in reincarnation) so don't spend it worrying about telling someone who obviously doesn't care enough about you to leave you alone all the time that its over.
