What are my swordtails doing?

I have a 55 gallon community tank with a fairly new group of swordtails. In the middle of my tank i have a Volcano decoration which i turned into a bubbler (aerator) for extra current. The tubing is showing because i have yet to finish planting the tank, and every so often the swordtails will swim up to the tubing and "kiss" at it for quite a few minutes.. I'm wondering if its algae that isn't visible me? I'm not particularly worried, intrigued if anything, because I have had swords before and have never seen this behavior. Any input would be appreciated :)

They are scavenging for algae. My community of mollies, platies and swords are always doing it. They go all over tue rocks, plants and the bubbler

I've had platies/mollies do this before for me too, I think they are just looking for food/microscopic bits of stuff that we can't see :)
