Why is it that conservatives are against legalizing drugs but support gun rights?

it makes no sense. how can you be against the right to take drugs(while hurting nobody but yourself) but support the right to bear arms(which can hurt others depending on the person). just for the record, i am liberal and i support both gun rights and legalizing all drugs. it just doesn't make sense to be against one thing but support the other

Update:

the 9th amendment features natural rights not specifically featured in the constitution

do you have the right to travel? if you do, where does it say in the constitution?

the same applies to the right to do damage to your own body if it means not hurting anyone else

the second amendment logic just doesn't work as an excuse anymore

Update 2:

@leon- drugs cause crime? no you're wrong, the fact that drugs are illegal causes crime because that opens the door to the black market

let me ask you something. do you honestly think that the war on drugs has worked?

Yes, BOTH should be available to responsible citizens.

These are two separate issues, and as all issues must stand or fall on their own merits each issue must make its own argument. Given that some drugs are less dangerous than others the least dangerous should be de-criminalized. That's not the same as being made 'legal'. If caught with type X drug, that drug should be confiscated....that's it! Selling small amounts of X type drug...a street value should be assigned and a fine in that amount rendered....nobody goes to prison until you reach X amount of street value. Dangerous drugs require harsher legal consequences. The point here is that jail costs money...collecting fines adds cash to the public treasury.

Firearms: Owning firearms is a 'right', no less a right than owning any other form of personal property. The exercise of that or any right is based on time, place and manner. Even the Pope can't hold Mass in the middle of a busy freeway at rush hour....no firearm owner can use his firearm in a dangerous manner. Both the Pope* and the guy with the gun would be arrested...and rightly so

Conclusion: It's bad logic to equate one thing to another. Try not to do that, and don't allow others to do it either!

Source(s): *The Pope probably wouldn't be arrested as he has diplomatic immunity as a head of state, but the Rev. Billy Bob....? I pity the fool!

From 2006 to 2010 the dems controlled both houses of congress.

From 2009 to 2010 they controlled both houses and the Presidency.

They could have forced legalization though, so why didn't they?

The people who want to keep drugs illegal are on both sides.

The right to bear arms is a right.

Legalization of drugs is not a right.

Still they have been legalized long ago.

    get real

The right to bear arms is very important. It does not include the right to kill at will.

They want to keep drugs prescription so the drug Companies profit. How many drugs come out that do nothing new and face lawsuits after they kill?

Reform Congress and get the international money out of the elections.

I support both and im a liberal.

But there are some real conservatives out there, Its just politicians who are against it. Democrats too. They make so much money off it the drug war.

Any citizen who is against it is brain washed by politicians and the media, they can not think for them selves

Honestly if it was never illegal and never talked about and you asked them "should we throw people in jail for smoking this plant?" they would say "no whats the point of that?"

Also the drugs are not mentioned in to constitution so why make it illegal? these idiots make no sense what so ever. they are big government

Try reading the second amendment, and then try to find a part of the Constitution giving citizens the right to get wasted.

No, you are entirely wrong.. if drugs were legal, they'd still be a huge crime problem. It's the nature of addictions. Consider the crime related to alcohol, and that's nowhere near as addicting and mind altering as drugs are.

"One is protected by the constitution and the other is not" is a bad answer. Slavery was protected by the American constitution. More to the point conservatives are (frequently) supporters of gun rights because they believe that private ownership of guns adds to the power of the individual citizen, power against potential attackers and the government itself if necessary. Whereas they are (frequently) opponents of expanding the sphere of legal recreational drugs because widespread recreational drug use has significant economic costs and is not particularly empowering. More like sedating.

Because guns, unlike drugs, can be used for self defense, both personal and for the safety of the larger community.

The second amendment is "A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.", not "A Militia using recreational drugs, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and use drugs, shall not be infringed."

Since my point of view has already been stated repeatedly I'll ask you a question. Why do Liberals want to legalize drugs but ban happy meals at McDonald's? San Francisco has recently banned the sale of happy meals at McDonald's.

Not the Ron Paul crowd of the conservative party. I fully support the decriminalization of marijuana, and support the decriminalization of automatic weapons and explosive ordinances. You couldnt get a more balanced liberty message than that of what Ron Paul offers. I dont understand why the rest of my party agrees with the governments position, and that marijuana is more dangerous than heroin and should be criminalized as such. They dont realize that there are people doing life sentences or up to 20 years for marijuana only offenses.
