If you like Great Teacher Onizuka, read Gintama and Denpa Kyoushi.
Gintama is about a laidback dude named Sakata Gintoki in his twenties that has no job, and started a job known as Yorozuya Gin-chan, or basically. You pay me, I do anything.
• In any case, this takes place in the Edo period of Japan, so it’s around the 1600s, I guess, but here’s the catch: Extraterrestrial aliens are part of society. So, in this world, although some characters like to dress old fashioned-ly, and the building are also old fashioned, there A HUGE AMOUNT of references to Japanese culture, whether it be Oronamin-C, or Doraemon. And in almost every episode there’s a reference to another manga or anime. Heck, there was a reference about Obama and Will Smith one time.
Furthermore, the main character, and even some side characters, are always super deep, and help others regardless of their own wellbeing. Gintoki Sakata normally changes people’s hearts similar to Onizuka, both of them are lazy, perverts, and have abnormally superhuman strength. (Gintoki is known as the White Demon form the Joi War. He fought against the invading aliens and actually killed a HUGE amount of aliens before escaping and hiding his identity. He then gave up and started “protecting what he could protect.” Trust me, it’s not as cheesy as it sounds. This show got up to the top 5 recently for its recent arc.)
Denpa Kyoushi is about a NEET twenty year old dude who is obsessed with anything anime or game related to the point where something outrageous happens: Someone claimed that an item called the “[something I forgot] Door” could never exist. The door allowed teleportation or something like that, and because the NEET dude couldn’t prove that the door could be made, he studied physics so hard that he got a Nobel prize for his “thesis” on dimensional travel or something like that when actually he published an article on a science magazine to prove that his beloved anime could in fact happen in the real world. The scientific community is stunned by his discovery, and they offer him jobs at the leading laboratories in the world, but he declines because he has to stay home and update his anime blog.
**** happens, and he has to start teaching at a school, and the chairman there wants the dude because he’s “interesting.” In that school, the students pretty much have more power than the teachers, and so the teachers can’t handle it because they technically could get fired by a student. But since this guy is so beast, he changes a lot of people in a more light way that GTO and it isn’t all the deep and emotional. But in any case, this guy acts like the direct opposite of GTO yet does the same job as GTO.
