Idea for my novel's plot?

So I've got two story lines to my plot sort of done but I need help with the main storyline for the narrator.

One element will be the narrator's little brother's experience dating in high school, out of race, and the issues he encounters with people's negative views of the relationship.

The other element is the narrator's subconscious/unaware, subtle attraction to his coworker, who is dating, quite simply, a douchebag. They are good friends, though, throughout the novel.

I want the ending of the novel to be that the narrator realizes he wanted the coworker all along but throughout the novel he has been doing things that signal his want, but he was unaware of his attraction. What could he possibly do? I thought maybe he could be settling for a below average looking girl and everyone looks down on him because of this, but then I'm lost on the rest of the idea. And if it helps, I want this plot to resemble the style of writing in Great Gatsby, not necessarily the story, but the style. Thanks in advance.

BTW, I kind of hit it on the head with the last sentence, but just in case you don't get it, this is not a romance novel. I want the themes to be about, first of all, relationships between races and society's views on them, and the other theme is how low self confidence combined with envy can lead to unreasonable actions.

    Wow, that sounds great!

For the ending, I would defiantly do the "society thinks he's settling" thing, but maybe also include how the girl feels about what society thinks. Do they think she got lucky? That he's too good for her? That she should have stayed with her douchey ex? Just a thought.

For the very end, maybe something about how it does't matter what society thinks of your personal relationships, and a mention of the main characters accepting that society WILL judge them but that they want to change that/just accept that that is the way it is but that they will preservere...

The last scene could be someone judging them and them having the strength to ignore it?

    good luck!
