Will squirrels eat caster beans?

Just wondering. I have a bunch of them.

I don't think the squirrels will eat them. Ricin is a by-product of the manufacture and extraction of Caster Oil from the caster bean.

I would be more worried about children picking the pods off the plants. But, they are stunning plants and make a bold statement in anyone's garden.

    I plant them myself.

Actually it is most likely illegal to have castor beans in your possession. We used to buy the seeds as we love the plants that they produce, plus the plants keep the moles out of your yard. We haven't found them for years. Castor beans are what the poison, ricin is made from.

    Squirrels like sunflower seeds.

Caster beans will make them sick if they eat them. They are bitter.

Source(s): We feed squirrels sunflower seeds.

    I hope not. They're poisonous.

The oil is an irritant, but the proteins are deadly.
