Help, i'm REALLY scared of airplanes?

Hello everyone!

I'm probably going to Puerto Rico in 1 week and am terrified to go on the plane!

The flight is only 3 hours, but the thought of being that high up in the air, the risk of a crash or a terrorist attack frightens me, so much that I just cry!

I went on a plane 5 years ago, and hated it.

I know that I sound like a wimp, what are some ways to get over my anxiety?

Also, if anyone has plane crash statistics, that would be very helpful.

Thank You.

    Berry,

Take a Bible with you on the plane and read Psalms. Realize that if this is the time when God wants to call you home, you pray for His will to be done every day. Your time of punching clocks, enduring hatred, and paying bills is over and you will be resting in your loving Father's arms.

When the world looks at us, they should see no fear in us. None. But we are not perfect and some activities just cause reactions in our gut that throw us off.

You will have a great trip. You will say a prayer, hold your Bible, and talk to someone on that flight about how your faith in God is keeping you so calm. That person will be edified.

    My prayers are with you.

Ever since the 9/11 incident, airline security measures have MAJORLY increased. Planes are the safest way of transportation and have been. I can guarantee you that you won't crash. Pilots are very experienced. The crew will make sure that literally everything is safe prior to takeoff. It's pretty much impossible for any terrorist act to occur on the plane, as airport security (also called the T.S.A.) is very experienced when it comes to security. The closest thing anyone can bring on a plane is a pen. Out of the multi-million flights taking place in the United States, less than 100 have been fatal. That's less than a .05% chance of anything fatal, and that's the HIGHEST percentage that I can bring up. It's nearly a 100% chance of safety. Also, this is a three hour flight, which is relatively short. I doubt anything can happen. The worst to expect is an aircraft delay, which usually won't last for more than an hour. Like another user said, have a good night sleep, eat a good meal, drink plentiful fluids, and have enough to eat. Planes today are very pleasant, and a great experience. Flight attendants are generous, and sometimes a plane will have some form of entertainment, like TV, satellite radio and maybe even WiFi for a price! Bottom line is, don't worry about a thing. And don't feel like a wimp. Flying is one of today's most common fears, so don't feel like you're in anyway a wimp. We all have our small little laws, but that makes up humans. Please don't let the percentages scare you, as those are the highest percentages I could compute. I hope this helps you in the most ways possible. Also, have a marvelous trip!

Plane travel is actually safer than being in a car. Though you are 35,000 feet in the air, you don't feel it and the thing with airplanes is that they travel in an organized path and air traffic control will not allow airplanes to get too close to each other. As for crashing, the likelihood is low as well. Airplanes are built better than ever and there are safety features so if something fails, there are back-up systems. Also the flight crew are well trained. As for terrorists, security is now tighter than ever so there is nothing to worry about. Plus passengers are now more bold and willing to take on a terrorist versus just sitting and being a victim. They say that if you boarded an airplane everyday for over 20,000 years then you may be in a crash so the chances of an airplane crash are around 1 in 10 million.

Ways to get over your anxiety is make sure you have a very restful night of sleep so you don't get stressed out the next day and have a nice meal before boarding.

The chances of a plane crash are VERY little.

Pilots and everyone working on the plane take extensive measures before the flight to make sure everything is safe sercure and in the proper place. They even do a sniff search for odd smells so nothing is leaking or burning! If something is even a hair outta line they won't let people board the plane until it's fixed.

And plane safety has nearly tripled since 9/11. So the chances of that happening on a simple three hour flight is zero.

I feel the same way you do. I've never been in an airplane, but the thought horrifies me because the only phobia I have is of heights. As others have mentioned, air travel is a lot safer than automobile travel. The hardest part for you will be boarding the plane and getting up in the air, but once you're up, you'll feel more relaxed. Just bring a book, music, or anything else you like to relax you. Don't worry about terrorist attacks, because security is just so tight these days that there won't be any chance of terrorists. Good luck.

  • Your not a wimp at all. My mother is the same way. She's terrified of flights & especially if she goes alone. What she used to do was take a Valium before she would get on the plane & she told me it helps. I would suggest to not sit near the window if it makes u too nervous. Also make conversations with the passenger next to u if he/she is willing to chat. Also distract yourself with music with music as well. That's what i myself do when on the plane. I listen to music on my cellphone And as others have said. Security has improved a lot since 9/11 & the chances of that are pretty small. I wish u well & hope u have a good time in Puerto Rico.

The statistics are fairly simple. The chances of you dying in a plane crash is about a million times less than you being killed in a car crash on the way to the airport. So don't let your mum drive you to the airport.

well first off, ok so i love planes, love flying blah blah blah, and so ill try to be as unbiased as possible. ok well aviation has improved SOOO much over the years. Right now in history is the safest time ever to fly. why? because of how advanced our technology is now! the pilots are trained extraodinarily well now, and are trained in every condition. Plus, think about it this way, if u WERE to get in an accident, fatal or non fatal, ur family would be getting a buttload of money!;) just sit back, and relax, and enjoy the ride/view:) OR u can give me the tickets;) good luck!BELOW IS A LINK TO ACCIDENT STATISTICS!!!!

It will be all right. It will. You are safer there than any place on earth, unless you are just sitting at home I guess.

After 9.11, I was afraid flying as well, and I fly quite a bit, so for about a year it was unnerving, but I finally got through it, mostly be reading and sleeping on the plane.

If you have a spiritual life, pray about it, that the Lord will protect you, His angels are surrounding the plane, and your pilots are the best they can be.

    Peace to you
