Christians. Can you quote John 3:16 without looking it up?
And if you can, and I suspect many can, can you also quote Matt 5:9 without looking it up? I am guessing no. Please be honest.
I don't expect anyone to memorize the bible, but those are two of the most famous. I find it ironic, but not surprising, that most evangelical Christians can quote the one from John, but not the one from Mathew. Another thing that doesn't surprise me it that fact that the only respondents here who were familiar with the Mathew quote were non-believers like me.
"Whats your point?"
It's this. Whether or not there really is a God, this strongly suggests the the evangelical churches that emerged from the American southeast have a militant political agenda. An agenda which exploits guilt (he died fo US) and greed (WE who live Jesus will be rewarded). Militant in that it favors American imperialist expansionism by down playing the more pacifist parts of the bible.

Oh, I'm not surprised that you find the fact that most Christians don't know what the passage in Mathew 5:9 says. Non believers are the BEST at picking and choosing scripture against Christians. Satan is good, very good at it. He like many non believers is quite capable of twisting the Word of God to make a point just as many on Y/A do. The actual question is though, do YOU understand the passage and it's context? I do.

Whats your point? Can you quote the theory of relativity without looking it up most people think they can but really they have no idea?
EDIT:
You must first ask yourself if life has a purpose.
If the answer is "no", then scientifically and definitively Atheism is illogical.

So which is it?

Not a christian, but yes. I love and know the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:3-10)
John 3:16: Jesus said that God gave his only begotten son. Jesus never said that HE was the only begotten son of God. In fact, if Christians knew the teachings of jesus and the findings of quantum mechanics and the evidence recenlty discovered in the "Unified Field (of consciousness) Theory, as well as I do, it would be obvious that the only begotten son of God (who died in the Big Bang) is the multiverse (or, if you are a Christian, the universe).
Though Jesus said that he was the light of the world, he also said that YOU are - again in the Sermon on the MOunt - some of which was radically edited - probably by Constantine.

David said Thy Word have I hid in mine heart that I might not sin against thee.
Most people saved or unsaved know the scripture John 3:16 especially if they were in sunday school as a child.
Matthew 5:9 is a part of Jesus Sermon on the Mount - the Beatitudes. I know them but I have never memorized them as to the exact number of the verse -- but any time I need to use a scripture the Holy Ghost gives me in that hour what to say. Also, all of us have a favorite scripture. i.e. Romans 8:28 For we know that all things work together for good; to them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose - (without looking up)... :))
Since you are putting Christians to the test - let me ask you - can you recite the preamble to the Constitution without looking it up or the first part of the Declaration of Independence? I had to memorize and recite when I was in school - I still remember them. :))
Oh, I have reached the age of "Senior Citizen"!!
