Ambush styled Martial Arts?

I wonder if a lot of people miss the point of Martial Arts like Capoeira and Drunken Boxing?

Personally I believe that they're supposed to be used in a similar method to a hidden knife or high kicks, you use them when you know they'll make a critical difference to the fight and not give any hints before then.

What are your thoughts?

Update:

This guy is a good example, he had his opponent backed into a corner and out cold before any kind of retaliation was even considered. He's used his style at a critical moment even if it was straight off the mark.

yeah most people think all fights are head on because they watch too much sport fighting meanwhile in a war that's the last thing you want to do and you want to shock & overwhelm very fast blitzkrieg style if you have the skill and the know how.

not all people can can overwhelm their opponent with shear force though and that's where guerrilla tactics come in hit & run style kinda stuff that sports are based on because there are too many rules for safety for some people to overwhelm their adversary.

like jab, run away then when they chase you over hand then retreat again etc.

I think of a fight as a war and act accordingly strategy wise and your right many styles for war were meant for ambush & preemptive attacks instead 2 guys standing in front of each other and slowly giving each other brain damage & laying on top of each other trying to give each other arthritis in each others joints.

most of the sports guys will say attacking someone who doesn't see it coming is a b!+ch move but in war all is fair end if someone is trying to kill me I certainly will not give him any advantage at all and take all I can get wither it's a preemptive strike or a n ambush.

I agree with you. One very good book that illustrates your point is "Way of A Warrior" by John Gilbey. In his book he writes about the true history behind martial arts like Capoeira and other martial arts throughout the world. He gives a fascinating account of the origins of Capoeira in particular and he describes how the slaves in Brazil would fight with blades or knives attached to their feet making a Capoeira kick lethal. Capoeira was outlawed in Brazil in the 1800s, but it continued to be practiced underground concealed as a dance.
