Do Vegans and Veggies think they will eat meat if it was grown artificially?

The future is meat grown from stem cells. Do you think this will kill off the groups calling themselves vegetarians at least?

Background

I spent some time in the Vegan world in 2005, due to my interest in raw food. I thought it was a lot about belonging to a group, with summer camps and websites and social meetings -even dating websites. Bearing in mind this meat will also probably be organic and healthy, I wonder if many veggies will cease to exist as a veggie. What will this do to the social aspect of being a veggie. From my experience, people tend to separate themselves from meat eaters, and feel a sense of pride in who they are. Respect for having empathy, but suddenly some of this will be taken away, as the main sacrifice is gone. Vegetarians at least will be no different than Mr average who has his sunday roast. What do you think? Even if you still go on to not eat meat, surely vegetarians would cease as a cause..

Interesting question! I read the article and then did a little research on stem cells because I wondered where they came from. First of all, after being vegetarian then vegan since 2008, I have no intention of eating meat again; now, just the memory of the texture of raw meat turns my stomach.

In the article, it says that the grown meat would be white in colour and they would add blood - so there will still be animal cruelty in "fake meat". I then wondered about where stem cells come from... and once again, they would need to use cells from animals. Granted, there would probably be less animals used, but if there are any used, it's a "no go" for me.

As a vegan, one thing that struck me about the article was the objectification of animals within the discussion. For example "So why use such high tech methods to produce meat when livestock production methods have done the job effectively for thousands of years?

It is because most food scientists believe that current methods of food production are unsustainable."

No mention of the unnatural lives these animals need to fulfill the selfish needs of humans or the pain and disrespect they endure every day of their lives... so typical of the scientific world and so sad and disappointing.

I would not eat that meat.

I think only those will go back to eating meat who stopped eating it because of non-violence and animal rights reasons but deep down they actually wish they could eat meat cause they like it and otherwise don't see anything wrong with eating it.

I stopped eating meat because it's bad for spiritual progress so I won't, besides as a vegetarian my health has improved so much (though it improved even more when I also got rid of other kinds of unhealthy food).

I don't believe that meat is a necessity at all, I believe that humans can thrive on a vegetarian based diet. Eating meat is just a tradition and habit, addiction to taste. Rather than growing something weird like artificial meat which can lead to unknown health problems (that would be an experiment really), it seems a lot more sensible to promote vegetarian life style.

I, for one, will not be eating this stuff. I haven't eaten meat for 25 years, haven't missed it in the slightest and enjoy the vegetarian food that is around. I believe in eating as much natural food as possible, no processed stuff and I don't eat meat for 2 reasons, 1. I don't like the way animals are reared and 2. I don't like the idea of eating dead flesh.

I also never knew that there was a social aspect to being a vegetarian, i live in the countryside though so maybe that's less likely here, i don't separate myself from meat eaters, I used to cook meat for work and now cook meat for my partner, I just don't want to eat it and that is unlikely to ever change.

The thing that is unlikely to change things for me is that I believe in eating natural food rather than processed food. I feel better for eating like this, the food tastes nicer. Food grown in the lab is not natural, and for me is likely to be classed as 'angry' food.

i believe desirable those will bypass back to eating meat who stopped eating it through fact of non-violence and animal rights motives even although deep down they somewhat choose they could consume meat reason they like it and in the different case do not see in spite of incorrect with eating it. i ended eating meat when you consider that it somewhat is undesirable for religious progression so I won't, different than for as a vegetarian my nicely being has extra suitable a lot (even though it extra suitable a lot extra once I additionally won rid of different varieties of undesirable food). i don't believe that meat is a necessity in any comprehend, i believe that human beings can thrive on a vegetarian based weight help plan. eating meat is purely a manner of existence and habit, habit to type. somewhat than coming up some factor weird and wonderful like man made meat that's able to bring about unknown nicely being issues (which could be an attempt somewhat), curiously a lot extra clever to sell vegetarian existence type.

Yeah, everyone says its the 'future' of meat. But until the price of it drops significantly I doubt it.

I'm vegetarian and I'd actually prefer if people ate meat from a local place where the animal was raised and killed respectfully than if they ate this 'lab meat'. I don't like the idea of it. It sounds too artificial/unreal to me... But thats only my opinion

I am vegan & actually love eating natural foods, since they are better for you anyway.I would not go back to eating meat for 2 reasons:

    (1) Meat is meat

    (2) It is artificial & lab produced....God knows what is in it & what future health problems it will bring .

I would parallel this in the same direction as GMO's & Monsanto.

I'd certainly be open to it though i probably wouldn't consume it & would need further research on the topic

Eating meat & eggs etc itself is not immoral in itself, its how the product was obtained that is immoral & yes that includes ''free range'' as the sentient being is still killed when production drops. Hence why i don't see anything wrong with somebody who keeps chickens as pets even when spent & eats their eggs which are layed.

Maybe if they were veg*an for health reasons. I wouldn't because i am vegetarian for moral reasons and they would have a horrible death either way so rather its grown naturally or artificially, its killed tragically and i wouldn't eat it.
