Do I have a chance with this girl?

Question

There's a girl in one of my classes. I'm a senior, she's a junior. She's very pretty, but is extremely 
shy, quiet, and aloof. I'm afraid her initial impression of me was a dumbass, lazy football player.  

As I've gotten to know her a little better, she became a little more open. I'm one of the few people- as far as I've seen- who can make her open up and laugh. When I decided to join badminton, she is on the team and we joked about how bad she was. I've also messaged her a few times on facebook about class assignments.

Do you think I have a chance at asking her to prom? I'm not the best with shy girls, but I want to give her a shot.

It sounds like she has some feelings for you and more importantly you have some feelings for her. From a girl's point of view, if someone asked me to the prom (especially someone I like to open up too) I'd be flattered and start to wonder if I did have even stronger feelings for you in the first place. When you next message her on facebook, slip in a little, 'How have things been?' every so often. Not only will she feel like more of a friend to you but like you actually care about her, which you do.

Yeah dude do it.  High school chicks love being seen with football players.  And it sounds like you two know each other well enough.  Asking someone to prom seems like a big deal but later you'll see it's really trivial.
