Full Moon myth or fact?

When there is a full moon people go crazy. That statement is generally considered a myth, is it a myth or is it true? What I mean by it being true is people see the full moon and take on behavior they wouldn't normally consider appropriate. I do not believe it has anything to do with the force of the moon. Or is it simply a myth, having little to no facts behind it. If you could show a link with your statement it would be appreciated. Thanks

Update:

Eh.. wrong section, but oh well

Update 2:

@ Stereotype Humans have always tended to progress to urbanize, so going back to nature doesn't seem to be a problem when creating communities is our nature.

I have looked at a few studies myself, many of which point to the full moon being a myth. Like these http://www.skepdic.com/fullmoon.html - http://www.livescience.com/1617-strange-happen-ful... -crisis calls to police or fire stations, -emergency room admissions

On the other hand you have studies like this. http://innerself.com/content/self-help/personal-gr... - http://www.policeops.com/full-moon-ion-effect.htm

A legitimate scientific basis for astrology is this - the forces of gravity can exert subtle forces on the neurological development of fetuses. And, perhaps, on the reactions in the brain of adults.

But the moon is there, directly overhead, whether its a half-moon or a full moon. How illuminated the moon is bares no effect on the pull of gravity it exerts. So if its strictly a "full moon" that does it, then I say it has nothing to do with the moon itself.

Consider this. On nights with a full moon, the sky and the city are far more illuminated. Its easier to see outside at night. Thus, there are more people wondering the streets and people are more inclined to stay out later.

People naturally wake up with exposure to sun light. Its the melatonin in the brain. Whether sunlight causes melatonin or if its psychological, I dont know. But the fact remains, the light reflected off the moon IS sunlight and the illuminated evenings might give psychological reason to wake up as well. The more people that are out, the more likely bad shiznit is going to go down.

It could also be psychosematic. Self-fulfilled prophesies. If people believe they will act crazier they might just do so. Like drinking alcohol, it gives some people a subconscious excuse to lessen their own inhibitions. Furthermore, if you treat people like they are different on full moons, they will act (react) differently to you, and you have false confirmation you accidentally gave rise to - thats why scientists do blind and double blind tests.

After all though, if the full moon can effect animal behavior then why is it such a stretch to believe that it affects human behavior too? Even if only subconsciously? We are just animals too.

There is also some scientific study being done into the human group unconsciousness, which also has a mythology behind it. It seems to be that there are persistent trends in human behaviors and interests. You could attribute it to social networking, but the myths go a lot further back than the internet and the reality of the effects go beyond hot pop topics.

Regardless of the science or the mythology, whichever is the true case... statistics will show. Look at the actual statistics. Look at hospital ER admittance. Look at crime rates and police reports. From what Ive heard (and this could just be hearsay too) there is in fact more craziness on full moon nights that is easily confirmed by statistics.

I would NOT go by what people say they believe from experience. Here is why. There is a cognitive bias in which confirming observations reinforce a belief, but invalidating observations are quickly forgotten, declared exceptions to the rule, or go unnoticed completely. When craziness happens any other night, its just a story. When it happens on a full moon, we are put in awe of the myth. If you see a black man eating fried chicken, its proof of the stereotype. But if you see a black man preferring grilled chicken, well, "there are exceptions to every rule". You dont notice all the black families that DONT go into KFC, but when your sitting there in the KFC and see black people, its "typical"... but you also set yourself up to believe it. Its BAD LOGIC.

People will tell you all the crazy stories that happened on full moons like its proof. But they wont remember or care to tell you, it wont come to mind, all the crazy stories that happened any other night of the month. And if no crazy stories happened, why is it so? Is it because they didnt even go outside because it was too dark?

Check the Police and hospital records. The moon has a very strong effect on us all. It is only our disconnection from our natural environment that has created doubt in city people like you.

The magnetic forces of earth sun and moon most diffidently have direct influence on human nature. The hows and whys are still a mystery.

I don't have a link, but based on my experiences working with people, I feel like it is a fact, because I swear people act totally weird when it's a full moon.
