You need a proper antenna. How many channels you will get depends on how far you live from the transmitting stations.

If your TV has HDMI connection, etc (which means it's a newer TV), chances are that it'll have a built-in Digital TV Tuner and the good-old rabbit ears will work. But if you want even more channels, then consider spending a bit more on a better antenna. After all, I should know as I haven't had cable and have been using an antenna to get over-the-air (OTA) TV for many years. I've saved thousands on cable bills and watch shows and movies on Netflix and OTA.
However, if your TV doesn't have the built-in tuner, you can easily fix that problem by getting an inexpensive digital converter box from a place like Amazon. Good Luck!

You can get your local broadcast stations with an antennna. You need a better antenna than rabbit ears though, as digital is more picky than analog was, about signal.
You won't get basic cable channels that aren't broadcast - you need to subscribe to cable to get them.
