Can someone suggest a sushi place in San Fran? My hubby and I are traveling from the East Coast and don't have any contacts out there to suggest places. Thanks!!

SF Chronicles “Bay Area Top 100 List” year after year, Chef Alexander Ong was given the Chronicle’s Rising Star award in 2000 (when he was still at Le Colonial) and he has continued to receive praise and recognition from Critic Michael Bauer ever since. Just a little over a year ago Betelnut was featured on the Inside Scoop and Mr. Bauer basically challenged San Franciscan’s to catch up with Chef Ong and his creative and cutting edge cuisine.

San Francisco has some excellent sushi restaurants. I will list a few of my favorites in neighborhoods that tourists frequently visit. There are no decent sushi spots near Fisherman's Wharf, so I wouldn't even bother there. If you are sightseeing in Golden Gate Park, the area near the 9th Avenue entrance has three great places:
Koo (408 Irving Street)
Ebisu (1283 9th Avenue)
Sushi Kazu (841 Irving Street)
Most of the restaurants in Japantown are pretty lousy and, ironically, not run by Japanese chefs. But the two exceptions to the rule are authentic, require reservations, and serve only a few guests per night. Call ahead well in advance if you want a seat:
Kiss Seafood (1700 Laguna Street)
Ino Sushi (22 Peace Plaza)
Ever chic and fashionable Sausalito has a Michelin starred sushi restaurant:
Sushi Ran (108 Caledonia Street)
Sushi in Downtown San Francisco is usually overpriced. Though not the best in the city, the quality of the food is still fairly high. But since you are paying for the view and ambiance anyhow, you might as well get ringside seats:
Ozumo (161 Stuart Street) has large windows looking out towards the Bay Bridge
Delica (Ferry Building) is best from 5-7 PM when commuters mob the terminal
Sanraku (Metreon) looks out upon SFMOMA and the MLK Memorial

It's kind of hard to find bad sushi in SF. However, Kabuto is pretty good. Blowfish Sushi is loud and trendy (try the tuna). One of my faves is Sushi Zone; unfortunately, it's the fave for a lot of people, so there may be a wait.

I like Kushi Tsuro in Japantown if you are in that part of town.
