if my great grandfather was of a mixed race, roughly what percentage of "black" am i?
i had some trouble wording the question, i feel extremely dumb asking this, and i hope not to offend anyone. but when people give their histories, theyve always got fractions or percentages to describe their heritage and i'm purely curious.
I've got no other african heritage from my family except from my great grandfather on my mom's side who was from Morocco and half black, half white. i was wondering if anyone could give me a rough estimate of basically how "black" i am solely in terms of racial geneology?

People who give fractions or percentages about their family history generally know nothing about it at all, so it isn't you asking a dumb question it is those people doing dumb things anyone who knows their ancestry or knows anything about ancestry would never disect their ancestors into fractions or percentages as each generation you research it changes that fractions / percentage...so you see it really shows that people are not interested enough in who they are where they came from, it is just the latest 'badge to wear'.............
You are mutiracial, mutricultural, mixed, blended whichever word you choose and if fractions or percentages are so important at this time in your life then, you work from the person you know and reduce their fractions or percentage by half /50% each generation until you get to you and that is what fractions or percentage you are..........................................

Ok If your Great Grandfather was half black , Your Grandparent who was his child would have been
1/4 your parent would be 1/8 and you would be 1/16th IF there was not other ancestry since him that was also black or mixed introduced into the lineage by the other ancestors who married into each generation that you are directly descended from.
I have never heard anyone use the term racial genealogy, probably because genealogy is the study of biological relationship within families. Race may be a part of the information that is learned while researching, but is not the primary purpose of Genealogy Research

S.R,
You are, as they say, half of each parent;
1/4 of each grandparent;
1/8 of each great-grandparent.
So, if one of your 8 great-grandparents was 1/2 black, you are 1/8 of 1/2 or 1/16 black. Percentage-wise that is 6.25%.
Of course, contrary to popular opinion on this site, many whites were already part black before they left Europe (or the Middle East, or India, home of the white race). This is due in large part to the Greek & Roman Empires. Back then, when people went to war, the loser became the slave of the winner. Both Empires invaded each other, other parts of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
Of course, also contrary to popular opinion, blacks from Africa invaded what is now Greece, Italy, Spain, France, and the British Isles.
20% of the DNA of a typical Spaniard is derived from blacks, Jews, & Muslims.
So, remember the simple math: going backwards, the number of ancestors doubles each generation (everyone has 2 parents); but for figuring your percentages, it is half of whatever the previous generation was.

Great Grandfather 1/2 black X White Great Grandmother----> Mother's father 1/4 Black
Mother's father X Mother's mother---> Mother 1/8 black.
Mother 1/8 black X father----> you 1/16 black.

Percentages aren't really good for race, but about 6%
If your mom was black you'd be 50%
If your mom's dad was black you'd be 25%
If your mom's dad's dad was black you'd be 12-13%
Since he's only half black then about 6-6.5%

one parent black = 50% black
one grandparent black = 25%
one great grandparent black = 12.5%
one great great grandparent black = 6.25% - So u will b around 6.25% black
