What was the estimated Native American population in North America at the beginning of the sixteenth century?

That was right after Columbus arrived. What was it estimated to be at the beginning of the nineteenth century when the Louisiana Purchase was made? What was it in 2000 ?

Thanks

Update:

Thanks, Bek. The reason I asked is because I recently saw a statement in an internet ad utilizing an elderly "Indian" spokesman claiming there were 60 million in North America and now only 800k.

Of course the greatest reduction would have occurred during the Anglo Saxon exercise of Manifest Destiny after the Purchase.

While it is difficult to determine exactly how many Natives lived in North America before Columbus,[5] estimates range from a low of 2.1 million (Ubelaker 1976) to 7 million people to (Russell Thornton) to a high of 18 million (Dobyns 1983).

    2000: 2,786,652
