What's with meerkats in Scotland?

I am visiting Scotland and I see references to meerkats in ads and other media. What is the connection? Are they just nuts about them?

    It is just the TV advert about an insurance comparison website.......... they have flooded the market with freebies and selling meerkat toys.......... the marketing company are going for a 'cult approach'

    Nah, meerkats are the ones nuts about Scotland and Scottish people. Why you ask? It's because Scottish people are absolutely gorgeous and lovely :D

    Meerkats are the sacred animal of Scotland. Sometimes we make sacrifices to the god of Hamish and ask him to bless us with more meerkats
