Toronto continues to re-build. What changes would you propose before next season if you were GM ?
ie. Who would you re-sign that will be UFA, what free agents would you sign, would you buy out any contracts, what sort of trades do you think they need to be looking at (the realistic kind) ?
Slim Shady: This question is in the Hockey section. Do I really need to be more specific ?
In follow up to peoples answers
1) Were Toronto to get Mikhail Grigorenko as their 2012 First Round choice (4th overall), do you think he could be the answer to a large Center for Toronto (6 foot 3 and 200 lbs already at Age 17)
2) Everyone agrees. Gustavsson needs to go. Who should Toronto replace him with (and I'm rather sure Nabokov has come to terms with the Islanders to return next season so is probably off the table now). Harding ? Leighton had a good run with the Flyers a season or two ago. Huet is available (asking too much at 5kk+) but otherwise a solid option. Is there anyone else that stands out ?

TOUGHNESS!
As a life long Leaf fan, it hurts to see such a wimpy, weak, and underpowered team every night. Burke said that he wanted to make a tough team, but he's basically made the opposite. The Leafs are basically bullied out there half of the time, especially with Orr's career probably being over and that they for some reason decide to sit Rosehill. Last year's first rounders Tyler Biggs (Very similar to Lucic) and Stuart Percy (Similar to Pronger) should definitely help this problem, but it's unlikely that they will make the team next year.
As for resigning I would let Crabb and Gustavsson go to free agency. If the Leafs really do want to get tough, they have to start with the bottom six forwards (3rd and 4th lines). Crabb doesn't hit and he's not a tough guy so I think he's gotta go. I still don't understand why we let Tim Brent go. He was great with shot blocking and hitting.
Gustavsson is clearly not an NHL goalie. Neither he or Reimer have had a good season, but Reimer is still quite young and has potential. I would let Gustavsson go to free agency, and I doubt that he will find a new team.
In terms of signing free agents, there really isn't very many good players out there this year, especially in terms of first line centres and goalies. The Leafs have to look for some trades if they want to acquire the centreman for Kessel and a starting goalie. To trade for a goalie like Bernier or Schneider would take a lot of prospects/draft picks which I don't want to go through again. So that realistically leaves goalies like Josh Harding and possibly Mikka Kiprusoff if the Flames decide to go into a rebuild.
There really is so much more I could say, but in short; I believe that Brian Burke will make a trade for a goalie, sign some free agents that will make the team tougher, and hopefully make a trade for a first line centre.
Edit: Yes Grigorenko could be a very good choice for the Leafs IF he is available by the 5th pick. He was Nail Yakupov's centreman in Sarnia and he could be good for Kessel and Lupul.
Goalies are going to be tough to come by this offseason. Free agency is offering very little and the only other option would be to trade for a goalie. Harding is the best choice at this point in my opinion. Leighton had a pretty good run with Philly, but he basically fell off right after that. Huet must be pretty old by now, and if I'm not mistaken, I think he may have gone to play in Europe (I may be wrong). Luongo and Kiprusoff may be available by trade depending on if the Flames want to rebuild this season or not. And yes, as you said, Nabokov will definitely be back in Long Island next year.

Discover now the best sport betting system: http://sport-betting-tips.checkhere.info/
Too many people think of sports betting as just something they do in their past time. However, many people can see the potential that exists if you manage to have the right sports betting strategy and correct approach to betting in general. Are you sick of losing? Interested in finding out how to turn your luck around? Do you want to know which sports betting strategies stand to help you make the most from your betting?
Any good strategy should allow you to place bets based on a systematic method. Of course there is always a random element or so called luck involved, but betting is all about stacking the odds in your favor. There should be no guess work involved or bets placed based on gut feelings. Betting is a business and it should be treated like one. Any money you use for betting needs to be separate from money you use for your daily life or anything else. How can you possibly expect to follow a strategy with money that was originally set aside to pay next week's rent with? You can't. This will help you to focus on the task of betting and remove any emotional strings attached to the money.
So what makes a good strategy or what should you look for in a strategy before you decide to implement it? Any good strategy needs to have a positive expectancy. This means that in the long run you will win. The hit rate of the strategy needs to be above 50% for you to be able to profit in the long run. An ideal win rate should be between 60 to 70%, because you will need to cover the fees and other expensive associated with betting. Is it feasible to expect you'll be able to find a system that has a 100% win rate? No, it isn't. The best you can do is find a system that has a positive expectancy and stick with it. In the long run you will make more money than you can possibly lose.
Keep whatever information and news you have about the teams as up to date as possible. Any changes in the teams makeup or factors that affect how the players play will great affect the potential outcome of a match. Make sure that you are constantly up to date on every aspect that affects the potential outcome of a match. Information is the key to winning at sports betting.

Fire Burke
Get a goalie. What would Luongo cost? A plane ticket? He would be a burdensome contract down the road but he would get them into 8th nd that's what they seem to love, keep that vicious cycle going.
If I were them, I would also target James vanRiemsdyk. An American so fits their mold (lol) but honestly, he will breakout soon and the Flyers have proven they can win without him and th rise of more of their young stars (Schenn, Couturier, Read) makes him another expendable one. Philly would take their 5th pick along with something else...or maybe Schenn and a pick. Buy low.
Aside from that, it's a trainwreck. Terrible contracts for players who don't deserbe them....and it's Burke's team now, no blaming anyone else.

They need a goalie. That's a good start. For the majority of the season they had no problem scoring, just keeping pucks out. They have a good D-group in Phaneuf, Gardiner, Gunnarson, and Liles (Schenn's questionable, especially if he can't get his game together next season), so I think they need to bring in 1-2 experienced and reliable defencemen.
Unless they pull of a big trade, they're not going to find a centre, and Burke said he's not too interested in free agency, so I think the best bet is drafting centre Alex Galchenyuk and seeing what he can do in a couple of years with Kessel. Until then, I think Bozak's pretty solid with Kessel and Lupul because he did almost get 50 points, and he might even improve on that next year.
They need a few physical veteran's too.

The Leafs are't making the playoffs unless they get:
1) an actual starting goalie. Last year Burke thought Reimer would do the job but the guy hadn't even played a full season in the NHL. I would say try to get Corey Schnieder from Vancouver, even though they will probably have to end up giving up to much to get him, HUGE value right now.
Or try to get a veteran who can still play:Nabokov. Leafs WILL NOT make the playoffs unless they have a legit starting goalie.
2) # 1 centermen with size. The Leafs are to small, they need size and have lacked top 6 size ever since Mats Sundin. I think Brian Burke will mainly go after one of Getzlaf, Ryan, or Perry. All can be superstars and all have size. Plus, it looks like like the Ducks should have a much different roster next season, so these guys aren't un-touchable. Maybe even go after Zack Parise. If Brian Burke goes into the off season and doesn't get a number one center, the leafs won't make the playoffs.
The Leafs are pretty close to making the playoffs. If the Leafs can get a legit starting goalie, and a first line centermen with size, i would say their chances of making next years playoffs are better than they have been in a long time.
Of course im a huge canucks fan and i hope they fail yet again.
