Waxing eyebrows questions...?

I've never waxed my eyebrows before but I've plucked them a bit, and I felt like when I did I was messing with my eyebrows natural shape. I want to get them waxed now. Does it hurt? when my sisters get their eyebrows done its all red and looks painful. How often would I have to get them done? I'm worried that if they do it wrong I'll look funny for a while...

    1. There is pain, but it's all done with at once, rather than pulling for prolonged time with tweezing. To cut down on pain and swelling, I hear using ice afterward does the trick. To be honest, after so many years of removing hair from the area, in my mid twenties I'm jut used to it :)

    2. Waxing is a great way to address your concern about the natural shape...unless you've already tweezed past that lol. I switched from tweezing to waxing years ago because, yes, the shape of my brows looks more natural that way. Also, the hair that grows in is lighter and finer than the result of tweezing - a BIG bonus for brunettes. You will need the hair to be a "grabbable" length to wax - so I wax maybe every 4-6 weeks once the hair is long enough for the wax to pull out. I can go 8 weeks without waxing the undersides and catch stragglers with tweezers in the between zone. You will need to wait if there's nothing there to remove, or the hair isn't long enough to grab (esp. with at home methods). It may take you a couple months to get to the shape you desire, but I think its worth it myself.

    3. There will be redness and a bit of swelling for about a half of a day, maybe less. I do my own now after watching the esthetician do it so many times. Wash the area with your normal facial soap (nothing harsh or with salycidic acid), get yourself makeup free. DO NOT have your brows (or anything) waxed in the week of, or the days immediately before and after, your menstrual cycle if you are a female - you are guaranteed more pain and swelling in that scenario. Lay off the eye makeup until the swelling is gone - maybe a day at most. I do mine on Friday to be spanky come Monday morning and puffy on my down time. Don't pick at excess or residual wax too much, you will just irritate the skin - I wait until the next morning and gently roll the wax stuck to the edge hairs or my skin with a damp cloth and mild soap. I find the liquid surgical wax - cheap - that you peel away once it harders - to be the best cheap at home method. The strips and wax method at salons involved stuff that is not generally available at the drugstore in my experience.

If you have someone at a spa or salon do this, PLEASE make sure they use a sterile, clean environment; fresh application sticks; and I myself am very wary of the "skanky wax bin" that looks like its been heating up since the Reagan administration. For those new to waxing, I highly recommend seeing a pro esthetician at a well established (read: maybe pricey) establishment. While its harder to catch an infection (fungal or otherwise) getting your brows done v. your nails, the possibility is still there.

I've gotten them waxed before. No, it doesn't hurt. First, they put some thing that feels like wax(lol obviously) and its a little warm. Then she gets those wooden sticks(the ones doctors use to put in your throat) and smears it around and such. Then she gets the strips and presses on it to smooth it out. Then she rips. It won't really hurt, just for about a second. Then they will pluck some hairs to clean it up and shape it when they're done. Remember, they're not gunna take your whole eyebrow off!;) but ye, it is red. It'll look horrible cuz of all the red, but once it goes away it'll be better.
