Why do cartoons and movies always serve punch?

It seems like at every party or social gathering of some sort, in many cartoons and movies, the default drink that is served is just "punch". Punch. Not soda, water, but always punch! haha, why is that?

Example: typical line: "I'm gonna go get some punch." Never any other beverage.

    I guess it's just a cheesy american movie line that has caught on
