Its a person that needs physical proof to believe in anything. They lack faith and so they don't believe in God.
I also like to call them Insecure. Why would atheist want evidence? because they dont trust their instincts.
Why did the atheist cross the road?
He thought there might be a street on the other side, but he wouldn’t believe it until he tested his hypothesis.
How many atheists does it take to change a light bulb?
Two. One to actually change the bulb, and the other to videotape the job so fundamentalists won’t claim that god did it.
M.T i will call u insecure. if you werent you would have believed in God. You would have found faith, and you would have been blessed. But u are narrow minded

A person who does not believe in a god or gods.
That tends to be the accepted definition. However "One who disbelieves or denies the existence of a God" tends to be a common definition found in dictionaries.... Which to me at least, is not quite the same.
You can have "faith" in many things outside of gods....So one can be an atheist who has faith in something. Just not faith in gods.
And no, Nick is wrong. There are many atheistic religions. LaVeyan Satanism and Buddhism for example are religions you can have and still be an atheist. And atheism has no sets of what is right or wrong, or any set of beliefs to live by. It is simply a disbelief in gods. Nothing more, nothing less. You will find many different philosophies on life amongst atheists.

The dictionary defines atheism as "the theory or belief that God does not exist" and an atheist as "related to or characterized by or given to atheism," and that sounds alright to me.

KissMe, how can you call atheists insecure? It takes a lot of guts to become one of the most disliked minorities in this day and age. Besides, which god should we believe in? Yours? I'm secure enough to not be talked into following a certain crowd, despite what my friends and even strangers say.

Why does everyone have so much trouble with this? A theist is someone who has a belief in a god or gods. Put an a in front and it becomes negative - someone who does not have a belief in god/gods. It is really that simple.

a person that thinks they are "agnostic" but never looked up "atheist" in the dictionary..... that's pretty much it.
Oh and never took a quantum physics class.
