Will steam cleaning help?

We just bought an older home.It has carpet, and some of it(hall, dining room, living room) has obvious pet stains and an odor. There are hardwoods below the carpets, but I don't have the time or money to work with those right now.I called and scheduled for Stanley Steemer to come out this week, but wonder if it will do any good since the stains are old? I don't expect the carpet s to be perfect, but hope that teh smell and some of the dirt will be taken care of.Has anyone had there carpets cleaned by Stanley Steemer?Did it help?

Sorry but no. The cleaning will help the smell for a little while but it will come back. The reason is that the urine soaks through the carpet, into the pad, then into the floor underneath. Steam cleaning will only clean the carpet.

We had the same problem in our house when we moved in, we actually had to pull out all the carpet, clean the subfloor underneath, seal the subfloor with a primer then lay down new floors.

If you have hardwood floors underneath, there is a good chance they are going to need to be refinished and resealed. Not just fot the smell but the color. Urine makes hardwood floors turn black and the only way to get the stain out is to sand the wood as deep as it was penetrated then refinish it.

    Best of luck

You know, if there really is hardwood floors underneath, if I was in your position I woul save the money on carpet cleaning an just rip it all out. Whatever the floors look like they will smell better and you can cover them with some area rugs until you can afford to refinish them.

Carpet cleaning company's are great for "freshening up" a carpet, but not for pet urine messes. Reason being, it spreads, think of it this way - you spill grape juice on a carpet, get a rag and start wiping, what happens? The stain is spreading as oppose to coming up. Same thing with pet urine in carpets.

The stains will not come out, they're too far set by now.. But the odor problem can be fixed, I highly recommend Odorcide, great product. I've used it for oil and gas odors in our garage, just spray it and voila, smell is gone.. I've used it for my carpet as well, dog accidents, as well as used it on my couch. My son fell asleep on it a few times without a pullup and had an accident, sprayed some on and again, voila, you'd never know it was pee'd on. And yes, I did put my nose to the cushion, smelled nothing. It doesn't just remove the odor but it kills the bacteria that causes the odor.

So if odor is your problem, Odorcide's the way to go. If stains are the big issue, you're going to have to remove the carpet.

    Good luck.
