Is it alright to cut off non-producing rose bush canes?
I pruned my rose bush and it has come back beautifully, loaded with blooms. However, there are three or four canes that don't have any blooms on them that are growing higher than the ones with blooms. Is it alright to cut off the ones without blooms?

trace the ones that are growing higher back to where they are attached to the base of the plant.... if they are coming from below the 'graft', they are root stock growth and yes, you do need to remove them , all the way down to the graft itself.... the graft is a lump sort of area on the main stem of the plant...it is where the rootstock rose and your pretty rose were grafted together so that your pretty rose could be stronger and more likely to grow well than if it had been on its own roots..... this is a common occurence...be aware that they will continue to try to grow and that you need to see to it that they don't.... if allowed to continue, they will take all the food and water first and the pretty rose will get very little and eventually die.....
